Prometheus Cave is the best known of Georgia's caves: a kilometer and a half of underground walkways, six halls of illuminated stalactites and a boat ride along an underground river at the end. Since 2026 the visit costs more and the schedule has changed, so fresh numbers matter more than old reviews. Why Prometheus Cave Is Famous
Speleologists discovered the cave near the village of Kumistavi outside Tskaltubo in 1984, and in 2011 it was fitted out for visitors: concrete walkways, railings, carefully placed lighting. The name comes from the myth of Prometheus, who according to one version of the legend was chained to the rocks right here in the Caucasus mountains, and Imereti has embraced that version wholeheartedly.
The full underground system runs for about 11 kilometers, of which 1,420 meters are open to visitors. The temperature inside stays around +14 degrees all year, so the cave works equally well in the August heat and in winter: one of the few places in Georgia that weather cannot spoil.
Inside the Cave: the Route and the Halls
The route passes through six halls, each with its own character: in one the ceiling rises 21 meters, in another the walkway ducks under stone folds that look like a frozen waterfall. Stalactites, stalagmites and columns are lit in different colors, and a couple of halls play music. The walk takes about an hour, groups go in with a guide, there is no self-guided option.

Georgian citizens and residents pay less: 16 GEL entrance and 14 GEL for the boat, minors 5.5 GEL. The cave now receives visitors daily, with no day off: in summer (May-August) from 10 am to 6 pm, in September-October until 5:30 pm, from November to April until 5 pm. The ticket office closes earlier, and the last group goes in roughly an hour before closing.
How to Get to Prometheus Cave
From Kutaisi

About 155 km and 2.5-3 hours each way, so doing it on your own in a day is tiring.
