The World War II bunker located in the Machakhela Gorge is a unique historical site demonstrating the defensive measures taken by Georgia during the Great Patriotic War. This fortified bunker was built to protect against potential threats from Turkey, which was a military threat at the time.
The architecture of the bunker was thought out to the smallest detail. It is located in such a way that its roof offers a panoramic view of the winding road leading to the gorge. This strategic position allowed to observe any enemy troop movements and provided excellent defense. Despite its impressive structure and the combat weapons installed in the bunker, it never took part in active combat. In 1958, after tensions with Turkey eased, the combat weapons were dismantled.
Today, the bunker is an important part of Georgia's historical heritage and an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in the military history of the region. A tour of this site allows you to not only learn more about the military technology and strategy of that time, but also enjoy the stunning views from its roof.
This historical bunker is included in several excursion routes offered by Travel Batumi. Book a tour through our website to discover not only the strategic importance of this fortification, but also the unique wartime atmosphere preserved in Adjara.
