Gvara Fortress in Georgia: How to Get There and What to See

This 6th century fortress is located in the picturesque Machakhela National Park, at the confluence of the Chorokhi and Machakhlistskali rivers. Due to its key position on an important trade route, the fortress protected the region from external threats.
The height of the hill on which the fortress stands reaches 50 meters above the river level, and the views from the top open up incredible panoramas of the surrounding mountains and rivers.

How to get to the Gvara fortress
You can visit the Gvara fortress from Batumi in several ways. Choose the one that suits you best.
By minibus
For budget travelers, minibuses are the cheapest way to get to the fortress, but they require more time and effort.
Take one of the minibuses: 202, 166, 172, 174, 400, 401, 402.
Departure — from the Batumi bus station (coordinates: 41.644304, 41.650034).
You need to get off at the Kirnati Most stop (coordinates: 41.519106, 41.719964).
After getting off, cross the road bridge.
Then you have two options:
Direct route: start climbing along the mountain trail, which begins 80 meters from the bridge. The climb is difficult, but there are steps and benches.
Easy route: continue along the asphalt road to a place with a panoramic view (coordinates: 41.515915, 41.718949), from where you can go down to the fortress.
The duration of the trip by minibus is about 2.5 hours.
By taxi
Taxi is a convenient way to get to the fortress for those who do not want to waste time waiting for minibuses.
The cost of a one-way trip from Batumi is from 35 to 55 lari.
It is important to agree with the taxi driver in advance that he will wait for you, otherwise the return may be a problem. The taxi driver may set the meter for waiting.
