Travel insurance for Georgia

Verified: November 2026

From January 1, 2026 every tourist needs a policy: at least 30,000 GEL of cover for the whole stay, in English or Georgian. Buy it online in minutes

Medical travel insurance for Georgia is required for citizens of every country, and the border police may check your policy on arrival. It costs from 2.7 GEL a day. Below: what the policy must cover, where to buy it online, how much it costs and what the fines are without it.

New entry rules to Georgia from January 1, 2026

Citizens of the EU, the US, Israel, Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine and Moldova still enter Georgia without a visa and can stay for up to a year. More on the length of stay and documents - in our article on visas and entry rules for Georgia.

What is new in 2026 is mandatory insurance, introduced by Georgian Government Resolution No. 602 of December 26, 2025. The patrol police may check your policy at border crossings: on arrival at Batumi Airport, in Tbilisi or Kutaisi, and at land crossings such as Sarpi on the Turkish border.

Insurance is not required only for holders of diplomatic, service or special passports, staff of embassies and international organisations with their families, and drivers of international freight and passenger transport. Children and seniors need a policy like everyone else: there are no age exemptions.

What medical insurance is suitable for tourists in Georgia

A policy from a Georgian or a foreign insurer is accepted if it meets four conditions:

  • cover of at least 30,000 GEL (about 10,000 euros) for medical treatment and accidents;
  • valid for your whole stay in Georgia, from the day you arrive to the day you leave;
  • written in English or Georgian;
  • paper or electronic - both are accepted, a file on your phone is enough.

The requirements are the same for all countries. A policy from your home insurer works too if it is in English and covers at least 30,000 GEL: check this before you fly, not at passport control.

Where to buy travel insurance for Georgia

We recommend a policy from a Georgian insurer: if something happens, assistance and payouts are handled inside the country, with no transfers from abroad.

How to buy travel insurance for Georgia online

  1. Open the insurer's website and choose Georgia as your destination.
  2. Enter your travel dates: the policy must cover your whole stay, from the day you arrive to the day you leave.
  3. Add every traveller with their date of birth, children too.
  4. Check that the cover is at least 30,000 GEL and add options if you need them: active sports, baggage, trip cancellation.
  5. Pay. The policy arrives by email; save the file on your phone and note the insurer's assistance number.

You do not need to visit an office, and you can buy the policy from any country before your trip.

How much travel insurance for Georgia costs

According to our data for October 2026, a travel policy costs from 2.7 GEL a day: about 19 GEL per person for a week. The price grows with the length of the trip, your age and the options. Compare it with the cost of accommodation, food and transport in our article on prices in Georgia in 2026.

Mountains, skiing, rafting: the active sports option

A basic policy is designed for an ordinary trip. If you plan mountain trekking, climbing, skiing in Gudauri or Bakuriani, rafting or paragliding, check that your policy includes an active sports option or the specific sport, and add it when you buy the policy if needed. Without it you pay for treating an injury on the slopes yourself, and there is a separate fine for such activities without cover (see below).

In our groups of up to 9 people the guide also drives the Mercedes Vito minivan; groups of 10 or more travel in a Sprinter minibus with a separate guide and driver. Our guides are local, speak Russian and have more than 10 years of experience.

Fines for not having insurance in Georgia

According to our data for November 2026, a foreigner staying in Georgia without a valid policy faces a fine of 300 GEL. If it is not paid on time, the amount doubles, and after a month it triples.

Mountain trekking, climbing, skiing and other active sports without the right cover - a fine of 500 to 1,000 GEL, up to 2,000 GEL for a repeat violation. Unpaid fines can lead to deportation and an entry ban.

Medical care for foreigners in Georgia is paid, so a policy protects you from more than a fine: a doctor's visit, an X-ray or a night in hospital without insurance come out of your own pocket.

If you need a doctor during your trip

The emergency number in Georgia is 112, free from any phone, around the clock. If it is not urgent, first call the assistance number on your policy: they will tell you which clinic to go to. Keep receipts and medical reports - you will need them for the payout.
