What awaits you
The short version of a trip to Mountain Adjara: the Adzharistskali valley with its waterfalls and stone bridges, a forest path in Mirveti and Gvara Fortress above the meeting of the rivers. We are back early, so the evening stays free.
The road is mountainous but smooth and paved. Walking is light: steps to the Waterfall of Love, stones at Makhuntseti and an easy path to Mirveti Waterfall. Families with children come along without trouble.
Lunch is at a restaurant, ordered from the menu, with no feast and dances. If you want exactly that, plus the Machakhela Gorge, choose All of Mountain Adjara in One Day. Zipline, rafting and a horse ride are possible on a private tour, so the group is not kept waiting.
What to bring
Flat-soled shoes for the wet stones by the waterfalls and a windbreaker: the mountains are cooler than the coast. Cash in lari for lunch, souvenirs and the viewpoint at Gvara.
How the day goes
The group gathers at stops near hotels; on a private tour we pick you up at your hotel door.
Here the Chorokhi, the main river of Adjara, takes in its largest tributary. The rivers are different colors and do not mix at once - you see it well from the roadside.
A small cascade right opposite the confluence, with steps leading up through the trees. It is strongest in spring, when the snow melts in the mountains.
The main waterfall of the trip: water falls from a sheer cliff more than 30 meters high. We climb over stones to the pool. At the entrance you can buy honey, jam and churchkhela (walnuts in grape juice).
A medieval stone arch over the river, a few hundred meters from the waterfall. There are no railings, but the bridge is wide and people cross to the other bank calmly. If you take the zipline, its line ends right here.
We have lunch at a restaurant on the way, ordering from the menu. The guide will suggest what to try from Adjarian cooking, for example Adjarian khachapuri (a cheese boat with an egg).
We cross a footbridge on cables. It sways slightly, and from the middle you get a good shot of the river.
A path through a boxwood forest leads to a waterfall of about 20 m, squeezed between rocks. It is shady and cool here even in the heat.
A stone bridge from the 11th-13th centuries, on the path from the waterfall. Its arch stands right on the rock, about 5 m above the water.
The fortress on a rock above the Machakhela River was in use from the 10th to the 18th century; archaeologists found 22 kvevri (clay wine jars) here. From the viewpoint you see the Machakhela meet the Chorokhi.
Return to Batumi
- The times in the programme are approximate. On the road a lot depends on the traffic, the weather and the pace of the group, so we leave a margin - no need to hurry at any stop.
- The guide or driver sometimes changes the order of the stops - for example, to reach a place before the crowds. All places of the programme stay in the trip.
