What awaits you
Rtveli, the Georgian grape harvest, is an autumn festival: families go out to the vineyards, cut the bunches, press the juice and lay a shared table. On this tour you spend such a day with a farmer in Mountain Adjara. Picking, stomping, churchkhela and the feast follow one another on the same farm, with no transfers.
On the way to the farm we stop in the gorge of the Adzharistskali River: the confluence of the rivers, two waterfalls and an old stone bridge. The road there is paved and runs along the river, and there is little walking at the stops.
Children usually get the most fun: stomping grapes and dipping a string of walnuts into grape juice. Adults get the host's wine at the table, next to the person who made it. The tour is seasonal: it runs in autumn, while the farmers still have grapes on the vine.
What to bring
Closed shoes you do not mind getting dirty: there is bare earth between the vine rows, and mud after rain. Wear clothes that can take a grape-juice stain.
Bring wet wipes and spare socks for after the stomping, a raincoat (rtveli is not stopped for rain) and cash in lari for the churchkhela workshop and shopping by the waterfall.
How to book
About 3 days before the tour we will message you with how to pay the prepayment.
How the day goes
We set off on the road to Keda, along the Chorokhi River.
Here the Adzharistskali flows into the Chorokhi, the main river of Adjara, which comes from Turkey. The two rivers are often a different shade, and you can see the streams run side by side for a while without mixing.
A small cascade across the road from the confluence, reached by steps through the trees. Locals call it Kibura, after the mountain above it. It is fullest in spring and after rain.
The most visited waterfall in Adjara: water falls down dark rock into a pool, and at the foot it is cool even in the heat. From the road you walk to it, the last stretch over stones. Churchkhela, honey and homemade wine are sold along the road.
A medieval stone bridge a few hundred meters from the waterfall: a single arch over the Adzharistskali, with no support in the middle. Locals call it Queen Tamar's bridge. There are no railings, so hold children by the hand.
The farmer shows you which rows to cut, and you pick the bunches yourself, with the mountains around you. The guide translates the farmer's story about his grapes into Russian; ask about English when booking.
The grapes you picked are crushed underfoot, the way Georgian villages do it, and this juice will later become the farmer's wine. Optional: a churchkhela workshop (walnuts on a string dipped in thickened grape juice) - you take yours home.
The hosts lay a shared table with home cooking and wine from their own farm, with Georgian songs and dances. The tasting happens right at the feast: you try what the farmer made himself.
Back the same way, along the river.
- The times in the programme are approximate. On the road a lot depends on the traffic, the weather and the pace of the group, so we leave a margin - no need to hurry at any stop.
- The guide or driver sometimes changes the order of the stops - for example, to reach a place before the crowds. All places of the programme stay in the trip.
