September is the month when Batumi comes out best: the sea has warmed over the summer to +26 °C, the air has cooled to a pleasant +25, the beaches empty out noticeably after September 1, and accommodation prices are already heading down. In the middle of the month Rtveli begins, the grape harvest, and a feast at a winery joins the usual summer program. Below: the weather by ten-day periods, sea temperature, an honest word about rain and a full trip plan - flights, accommodation, insurance, tours.
In short: why September beats summer
Contents
The monthly averages - +25.5 °C by day and +18.1 °C at night - hide the main thing: September in Batumi is three different months. The first ten days are still August, only without the crowds and the heat. The second are the velvet season people come here for in September. The third bring the first autumn rains, but with a sea people still swim in. When choosing your flight dates, think in ten-day periods, not in the month as a whole.
| Period | Day | Night | Sea | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| September 1-10 | +27-28 °C | +20 °C | +26 °C | Full summer: beach from morning to evening, no sweater at night |
| September 11-20 | +25-26 °C | +18 °C | +25 °C | Velvet season: no heat, warm sea, Rtveli begins |
| September 21-30 | +23-24 °C | +16-17 °C | +23-24 °C | Swimming by day, a light jacket in the evening, more rain |
A separate September detail is the light. The days shorten fast: on September 1 the sun sets at 19:46, on the 30th already at 18:57. For photography this is the best month of the year, with sunsets over the sea caught right from the boulevard; for planning, it is a reason to start long day trips earlier so you return in daylight.

The sea cools more slowly than the air, and the whole of September rests on that. In the first half of the month the water is +25-26 °C - the same as in July and noticeably warmer than June's +22. By the end of the month it drops to +23-24, still comfortable swimming by day; it gets cool not in the water but on the shore after sunset. The full picture for the year is on the page about sea temperature in Batumi by month.
Jellyfish are rare in Batumi, and September is no exception; swimming in the city is not closed because of weather, and September storms, when they happen, pass within a day. Lifeguard posts, sunbed rental and cafes on the beaches of Batumi work all month, just without the queues. If you are unsure whether to pack a swimsuit for the last days of September - pack it: our guide to the swimming season in Batumi explains why the water stays warm until mid-October.
Let's be honest: by millimeters, September is one of the wetter months of the year in Batumi, and climate tables will show it. But those millimeters fall at night and all at once: a typical September rain is a downpour after midnight or a half-hour burst by day, after which the air freshens and the heat is gone. There are about 22 sunny days in the month and two or three overcast ones, and those are the ones to count as lost for the beach. For such a day there is a list of where to go in Batumi when it rains: from covered markets to Prometheus Cave, where weather does not matter.
Hence a tip on forecasts. In September the seven-day summary almost always shows a row of clouds with raindrops, and tourists looking at it from home cancel their plans. Look not at the icon but at two parameters: the time of precipitation (night or day) and its volume in millimeters. A rain icon with 2-3 mm at night is a dry beach day. The current summary with these details is on our Batumi weather page, and if rain does arrive by day - remember that beyond the ridge, in Kutaisi and Mountainous Adjara, it often does not fall at all.
The most common question before buying flights is whether to come in the last week of August or the first week of September. A comparison by numbers, not by feelings:
| Parameter | August | September |
|---|---|---|
| Daytime air | +28-30 °C, humid heat | +25-27 °C, easy to breathe |
| Sea | +27 °C | +26 °C early, +24 late |
| Beaches and promenade | Peak season, sunbeds gone by 10 am | Free from the first days: families left for school |
| Accommodation | Yearly maximum | 15-20% cheaper, more choice |
| Sunset | 20:30 early in the month | 19:46 → 18:57, the best light for photos |
| Tours | The full summer program | The full summer program + Rtveli from mid-month |
| Rain | Rare short showers | More often, but at night; 2-3 overcast days |
The only row where August wins is the sea at the very end of September, a couple of degrees cooler. Everything else favors September, and especially its first twenty days. All three autumn months in one comparison are on the page Batumi in autumn.

The beach program in September is the same as in summer, only more pleasant: the sea is warm, the sun does not burn, and a sunbed is available at any hour. The city is fully in service too - the Argo cable car runs until late at night in September with dancing at the top in the evening, the dolphinarium gives three shows a day, and nothing on the list of the main attractions of Batumi has closed for the season.
The main September difference is the day trips. All summer tours continue: Prometheus Cave and Martvili Canyon, Mountainous Adjara with waterfalls and a feast, Gomis Mta above the clouds - and going in September is easier than in July: the mountains no longer have the daytime stuffiness, and the sunset at Gomis Mta comes earlier, so you are back in Batumi before midnight. From mid-September the Rtveli grape harvest tour joins the program: at a family winery you get pruning shears and a basket, pick the bunches, press the juice with your feet, dip churchkhela into hot pelamushi and sit down at the common table with the hosts. Rtveli runs until mid-November, but only in September does it come with the sea attached. Exact departure dates are in the schedule of group excursions: in September it is still the dense summer one.
September in Adjara is the month when the market outruns any restaurant. On the stalls of the Boni market there are mountains of grapes of every color at a price that would not buy a kilogram in Europe; ripe figs that do not survive transport and therefore are never exported; the first young hazelnuts; corn grilled over coals right by the promenade. Churchkhela in September is not the souvenir kind but fresh - it was just dipped in that very grape juice. Tangerines ripen later, in November; September belongs to the grape.

The natural continuation of the table is wine. A wine tasting in a cellar in Batumi gains extra meaning in September: you taste last year's harvest in the very days the new one is being picked outside the city. And after Rtveli, where you pressed the grapes yourself, the word «qvevri» stops being a word from a guidebook.
People usually search this before buying flights, so here is the whole cycle. You can fly into Adjara through two airports: Batumi, 15 minutes from the center, and Kutaisi, the main low-cost hub two hours away by bus. September fares are cheaper than August ones, and the best prices to both airports are easy to compare at once - check flight prices to Batumi and Kutaisi. The rest of the way is covered step by step: from Batumi Airport and from Kutaisi Airport, with buses, taxis and transfers priced. If you fly via Tbilisi, there are now regular domestic flights to Batumi, about an hour in the air, and the connection is easy to book as a single ticket in the same search; the overland options, train, buses and transfer from Tbilisi to Batumi, are covered separately.

Accommodation is the most tangible September saving. After August, hotels and apartments by the sea free up, and prices for the same flats drop by 15-20%; a sea view that cost as much as a suite in August comes at an ordinary price in September. The price range by district is on the page about the cost of accommodation in Batumi, and options with free cancellation for your dates are easy to find on Booking: in September the properties that were sold out months ahead in summer reappear there. If you prefer specific names, we have our own lists: the best hotels in Batumi, budget hotels and five-star hotels with pools.
Since January 1, 2026, insurance has been a condition of entry to Georgia rather than a recommendation - the details are in our guide to travel insurance for Georgia. A practical option is a Georgian policy, under which a claim is paid inside the country without waiting for a transfer from abroad: to buy insurance on polis.ge takes a few minutes.
A car in September is a good idea for two reasons at once: the mountain roads are emptier than in summer, and rental companies lower their rates once August ends. For independent trips to Makhuntseti, Kobuleti or Ureki it is convenient to rent a car from local companies on Localrent - local firms with fair terms and delivery to your hotel.
A September suitcase is a summer one with one extra layer on top. A swimsuit and beach things are needed for the whole month, the last week included. Add a light jacket or a sweater for the evening: after 20:00 on the boulevard it is +17-18, and that is the first thing people regret when they packed «like for August». A compact umbrella or a raincoat will come in handy two or three times, most often at night on the way back from a restaurant. For Rtveli and mountain trips, closed shoes you do not mind ruining: at the winery you will walk between the rows, and at the waterfalls over wet stones. Sunscreen is as necessary in September as in July: the sun is lower, but you spend more time on the beach because you are not hiding from the heat.
Yes. In the last ten days the water holds at +23-24 °C, and people swim all day. It gets cool not in the sea but on the shore after sunset, so take a sweater to the beach in the evening.

Yes, noticeably: accommodation is 15-20% cheaper thanks to the hotels and apartments freed up after August, and flights and car rental go down too. Prices for food, tours and transport do not change.
All the summer ones: Prometheus Cave, Martvili Canyon, Mountainous Adjara, Gomis Mta, boat trips. From mid-September Rtveli is added - a grape harvest with a feast at a winery, running until mid-November. The dates are in the schedule of group excursions.
